James Baylor Blackford collection [manuscript], 1832-1950.

The bulk of the collection consists of the diary and business papers of Joseph K. Ruebush, (bulk 1938-1950), of the bookbinding and publishing firm Ruebush and Kiffer of Dayton, Va. The diary, 1910 Jan 1-Aug 19, gives notes on the weather, Ruebush's daily activities, letters received, money spent, reading, orchestra attendance, new home and garden, and his wife. Only a few passages relate to the firm of Ruebush & Kieffer, Dayton, Va. The death of Mark Twain is noted on April 21. Business papers of the firm of Ruebush and Kieffer, bookbinders and publishers of Dayton, Va., consist entirely of correspondence with customers, 1938-1950. Miscellaneous items include a letter from Howel Davies to Messrs. Seth Low & Co., 1832 July 16, sending a box of calomel and ordering supplies. Three letters to William Ward Norvell, an Episcopal minister at Harris Post Office, Louisa County, from George Adie, Richard Kidder Meade and William Friend, 1836-1839, discuss a possible move to Kentucky, the building of new churches in Louisa and Charlottesville, and the religious campaign of evangelist Allen Magruder. Two letters from Charles Lewis, 1840, to Augustus B. Clarke discuss life at College Hill, Washington, D. C., evidently a preparatory school for seminary. A letter from Slingluff and [Erring?], Baltimore merchants to Richard Speck, merchant of Hedgesville, Va., 1849, conveys an invoice of goods shipped. A letter from Mollie Randolph, of Charlottesville, Va., to her sister, 1851, contains news of friends and describes a University of Virginia student parade and commotion. A letter from John C. Rutherfoord, a delegate from Goochland County, Va., to Thomas P. Watkins, 1852, concerns a debt.
